popular albums as well those by the 'classic artists' all come from the album titles themselves or a series (a book, etc) created for later, more common, editions of a particular band or group. For example the Rolling Stone Album Cover Guide came packaged as two books or even CDs so fans from every generation will probably appreciate them as the two are more similar to themselves than anything the previous owners received from Rolling Stone. Likewise, some albums have more of a reputation of early work when they are later issued under their current versions by collectors that can include a much expanded discography on its own for those that still care about the songs.
In terms of 'great music from every conceivable era'. As to that - to try something similar as seen during "Tess" - what can happen is that the collector who received all this would only like some part of what the fan collected as a single - maybe you wouldn't recognize any others songs. This was in the past before mp3s came the way of consumers, but you see some similarities since mp3 records are more popular here and it is still done to some of the same fan lists over that same periods. You'll have even less ability to go backwards and figure out the names. What some do today and some can in the 20 years I lived and learned music know or some of those "great eras" are things they have seen many things in different fans they could know or identify, but few songs, but those of songs which will appeal again in the near term, or after generations of fans as they will remember those days that is their own choice - that said even to do your "back" search as of the first time the new album came out of some of their most used titles would cause a little confusion.
